The purpose is to slow or stop the spread of wildfire, reducing the chance that flames or embers reach your home. The wildland-urban interface around Tahoe is prone to wildfire due to steep terrain, dense forest, and heavy snow loads that cause fallen branches and fuel accumulation. Without proper vegetation management, a wildfire can quickly spread from ground fuels or nearby forest into a home.
There are 3 Defensible space zones 0,1, and 2. Research has shown that keeping the ground free of flammable debris within 5′ (Zone 0) of the structure significantly reduces the chances of ember cast igniting the debris adjacent to the house.
